James 5: Conclusion

  • 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
    • Many people, including me, believe this means to confess faults to each other that need to be reconciled before men.
      • If I hurt you, I need to confess and we should pray.
      • If I stole, I need to confess.
      • If I gossiped about you, I need to confess.
      • If I had an affair, I would need to confess.
    • Jesus told us we are to ask forgiveness first from the one we offended before asking God to forgive us.
      • Matthew 5:23-24“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

        • First go make it right then come back to God!
    • I think James is saying if you can confess your faults to others and they can hear it and then pray with you, then you have some righteousness going on and it produces power and is very effective!
  • 17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
    • I love this verse! We get all down on ourselves and think we are nothing and who is God to hear us and on and on….
    • But here it states perfectly that the power of prayer is not just for some Nor is it limited to small results! Elijah was man JUST like us!
    • Do not think of yourself as greater than others, but do not think of yourself as less than others. You are as powerful as Elijah! You can be a person with a a heart like David! You can walk through fire like the three Hebrew boys and come out untouched! You can have God on your side just as much as anyone ever has!
    • Get busy praying! Have faith! Don’t give up!
  • 19 My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins
    • Many struggle with this as if it is saying that you could lose your salvation and be turned back.
    • I looked up the word in its original form and this is what it says:
      • G5590 ψυχή psuchē psoo-khay’ From G5594; breath, that is, (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from G4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from G2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew [H5315], [H7307] and [H2416]: – heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you.
  • I believe this verse speaks to Christians about Christians and says if you see one doing wrong help him so that his life might not perish. Not the everlasting soul but the life that he has.
  • I know others disagree. I am no expert. But either way if you see anyone sinning you need to pray about rather you should help them. Be careful to get the log out of your eye first!
  • I hope you have enjoyed or have received some benefit from this Bible Study. I have!

Sharing with you these studies are scary for me. I am just a woman who is trying to learn more and more about God I am sharing just in hopes it will help someone!

I believe we have been given God’s word for a purpose. I want to do His will, and grow closer and closer to him!
