Love Others Like Jesus Loves You

So since it is almost Valentine’s Day I thought I would do a study on love.   Wow there is a lot about love in the Bible!  But God graciously narrowed it down for me to be able to come up with just one great focus on love.  Love others how Jesus loves you.

John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

So the first thing that jumped out to me is that it is a command!  He did not say, “Oh hey, if you feel like it, love others.”  Nor did He say, “When it is easy, convenient, fun, good timing, or because it makes you look good, love others.”  He said it is a command.  So loving others is being obedient!

So this verse brings up the most natural question. “How does Jesus love us?”  Here are a few ways that I found through my study. I imagine there are many many more!  More than we even read about in the Bible… “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written” (John 21:25).

  1. If Jesus commanded it, we can do it! Do you know someone hard to love?  Every want to say I can’t do it?  You can, because Jesus commanded it.  Philippians 4:13  I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
  2. Jesus showed his love in action to the lowly, the sick, the shunned and even the rich. He was not partial about who to love.   But He spent His time loving on those who knew they needed Him, those who came to Him, and those who were willing to be touched by or touch Him.  He did not just talk about loving them.  He did things to prove that love.
    1. So we should love those who will let us love them. That does not mean we just take the first rejection as a reason not to love. People reject other people’s attempts to love them out of fear of rejection, low self-esteem, or doubt that the love offered is real. I have done all three of these in my life.  I am so grateful there were people in my life who insisted I was worth loving no matter my feelings!
      1. But if you try to love others and they walk away, let them walk. Jesus did this.
      2. John 6:66-67 66 From this time many of his disciplesturned back and no longer followed him.67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
  • And how about the rich man who walked away after Jesus said sell all you have?
  1. Matthew 10:14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.
  1. Jesus showed love through healing the sick. “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick” (Matthew 14:14).
    1. We can love like Jesus loved us by having compassion and helping the sick!
      1. You may say “I can’t cure them!” No you cannot, but you can comfort them and help them in other ways.
      2. But that brings us to the next way Jesus showed love.
    2. Jesus showed love by praying for people.
      1. Have you ever thought about why Jesus prayed if He is God? I believe one reason is He was teaching us to pray, what to pray, and who to pray for.
        1. But Jesus prayed for people out of love. He prayed for you and me!
        2. John 17:20-23 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
  • So we should imitate Him, in love, and pray for others!
  1. Jesus showed love by feeding people. Hunger is a real thing, one of the most basic of needs.
    1. “Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.” (Matthew 15:32).
    2. I like this one because to me, feeding people is a great way to show love. I love it when people feed me, but I love to have such a basic way to show love!
    3. And it does not have to extravagant. Like bringing cookies to try to show love!
  2. Jesus showed love by caring about people’s eternal souls!
    1. He was always showing people the way to salvation!
      1. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things” (Mark 6:34)
    2. We need to have a heart filled with love for those who are not saved. I mean really if you think about it, this is most basic need any person has!   The need to escape hell and enter into heaven with our Lord!
  3. And last but not least, for today anyway, is Jesus loved with a sacrificial love.
    1. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
    2. Are we willing to love people even if it hurts? Jesus loved all the way to death!
      1. So what are ways we love people with a sacrificial love?
        1. We love even if it hurts financially.
        2. We love even if it is physically hard to do.
        3. We love even if it is emotionally hard to do.
        4. We love when we don’t have time, we make time.
        5. We love when we don’t feel like or want to.
        6. We love because we love Him!
  1. So let’s recap.
    1. Love because we are commanded to.
    2. Love the unworthy, we were unworthy weren’t we?
    3. Don’t be a snob in deciding who to love!
    4. Love by helping the sick!
    5. Love by praying for others.
    6. Love by spreading the wonderful news concerning salvation
    7. Love until it hurts and keep on loving!
